The Last Circus

Yesterday I watched "The Last Circus" and I couldn't really like it…
It has interesting characters but the story doesn't feel cohesive. Then again, I really wasn't paying attention. For me taking care of J and watching a movie is not quite compatible.

For the review:
The start of the movie takes place close in time to the end of Spain civil war. Now, as a frequent movie goer and ignorant about Spain's history, it would seem that this war has had a great impact. More than once a movie is set at that time or its a consequence of something that happened during that period (La Lengua de las Mariposas, El Laberinto del Fauno and el Espinazo del Diablo).

In "The Last Circus" we see as a circus performance is interrupted when one side of the conflict recruits anyone that can carry a rifle to the fight. They do so by force. Many are killed in the subsequence battle but not the main character's father. The events lead to a "revenge"situation that gets compounded by a love triangle. There are interesting visuals but the twists that tie the stories fell out of pace. They feel forced and not quite tying everything together but rather stumbling.

All in all, I would watch it again just because I don't think it is that bad. That is, I want to give it another chance. While it is billed as gory and violent I don't think it is more than any average movie. Thus, I don't recommend it.

There you have it.
